Gul Panag to fight against female foeticide

Chandigarh, May 13 (IANS) Former Miss India and actress Gul Panag will now be seen in a new avatar of a crusader disseminating awareness about social evils like female foeticide and drug addiction.

She has joined hands with the Chandigarh administration for this endeavour. The health department here has enrolled a city-based NGO Shamsher Singh Foundation under the ongoing partnership initiative programme of Chandigarh administration, said officials here Thursday.

Gul, founder member of this NGO, has signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the health department to work in this direction.

"We have assured the officials concerned that our NGO will work with full dedication and commitment. We will make this programme of generating awareness against female foeticide and drug addition a huge success in this region," said Gul, 31, Thursday.

The actress is known for doing socially relevant films -- her first film "Dhoop" was based on the real story of Kargil war hero Anuj Nayyar. In Nagesh Kukunoor's "Dor", she played Zeenat Fatima, who fights to save her husband, and received critical acclaim for her performance.

The administration has briefed Gul and other officials of the NGO about their roles and responsibilities.

"We have apprised them about their responsibilities in generating awareness about these issues. Their work involves monitoring of ultrasound centres to prevent sex determination tests as well as volunteering as decoy clients to conduct raids," said Ram Niwas, health-cum home secretary of Chandigarh.

"The NGO will also motivate people by recognising the birth of second girl child in the form of celebrations of birthdays or festivals like Lohri. They will also identify drug addicts and help them to shun drugs," stated Niwas.

Kites' to have US, British premiere

Mumbai, May 13 (IANS) The much-awaited love story 'Kites', starring Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori, will have a US and British premiere May 16 and May 18 respectively.

Produced by the lead actor's father Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu, "Kites" will have a world-wide release May 21. It will be distributed and marketed by Reliance BIG Pictures.

"We are having a New York premiere for the movie at AMC Empire (theatre), Times Square on May 16," a source close to the film unit told IANS.

"Before that on May 14 and 15, Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Anurag Basu, and Rajesh Roshan will be doing promotions for the same," the source added.

The New York premiere will shortly be followed by the one in London.

"Then on May 18 there is a premiere in London at Odeon West End and then they come back here on May 19 midnight," the source added.

A love story about an Indian man's affair with a Latin woman and their predicament as they don't understand each other's language, "Kites" is about their thrilling journey filled with precious moments and unexpected betrayal.

An English version of the movie, titled "Kites: The Remix" and edited as per western sensibilities by Hollywood director Brett Ratner is releasing May 28.

The promotions for the same have also been going on with Ratner and Mori in the US.

Industry sources also revealed that Mori will be in India "for a week to 10 days" after being in London. It will be her second trip to India.

Mumbai, May 6 (IANS) Actress Katrina Kaif, who will be seen as a politician in her forthcoming release "Raajneeti", is learning dirt bike riding for Zoya Akhtar's "Running with the Bulls".

The actress is said to be impressed with the script and is throwing herself into all sorts of stunt training to prepare for her role.

"Though Katrina is in London visiting her family, she is making time to meet deep sea diving instructors. She is very kicked about the stunts in the film - be it dirt bike riding for which she has already started training or deep sea diving for which she is soon to enroll in classes on her return from London," a source close to Katrina said in a press statement.

"Katrina has never attempted anything like this before but has already started preparing for her role," added the source.

The cast of "Running with the Bulls" also includes Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol.

Mallika Sherawat's double bonanza at Cannes

New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) The first look of Mallika Sherawat snake woman story "Hisss" will be unveiled at the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival, starting May 12. Her "Love, Barack" will also be introduced at the gala event.

Rumour has it that even live snakes would be involved in the unveiling.

Directed by Jennifer Lynch and produced by Govind Menon and Vikram Singh Lamba of Split Image Pictures, the movie also stars Irrfan Khan, Divya Dutta and American character actor Jeff Doucette. It will be distributed by Venus Records and Tapes.

Industry sources inform that the producers will announce the release date at the festival. Irrfan has confirmed his presence.

Mallika's other movie "Love, Barack" will also be introduced at the fest. A romantic comedy set during Barack Obama's campaign for the US Presidency, it was wrapped up last month in Los Angeles.

Aishwarya Rai inspired me to do Hindi Raavan Vikram

Mumbai, April 30 (IANS) He is a southern superstar. As Vikram steps into Bollywood at the age of 44 with "Raavan", he is acutely aware of going where perhaps no Indian actor has gone before - playing the hero in the Hindi version and the villain in the Tamil edition.

He admits to being initially scared to be part of the Hindi version of director Mani Ratnam's "Raavan" but says his co-star Aishwarya Rai brilliant performance in the Tamil venture boosted his confidence.

"Initially, I was very scared because I had this mental block. What kept me going was that Ash didn't know Tamil and she was doing so well," Vikram told IANS in an interview.

"Had I been only doing the Hindi version, I would have been really worried. But it is also in Tamil and everyone made me feel quite comfortable," he added.

Vikram is perhaps the first actor who is doing a film in two different languages and playing two different characters in them. In the Hindi version he will be seen in the positive role as Aishwarya's husband while in Tamil he will play Beera, a negative character being essayed by Abhishek in the Hindi version.

"No one in the world has done the same film in two languages and with a different role. I think that was something that got me hooked," said Vikram.

"For many days I had to shoot simultaneously in both the languages. It was amazing. I would do a sequence then I would go and change the make-up, take out all the dirt and blood, put another design of dirt and blood and do a sequence for the second language. Usually make-up takes an hour, but for this film here I had to get ready in 10 minutes to finish the fight sequences," said Vikram.

Reports say "Raavan" is a modern interpretation of the epic "Ramayana". Commenting on that, Vikram said "every film has taken something from the epic".

"It's not Ramayana. When you see the film, you may find the main character is like Rama. But the way he (Ratnam) has designed it, the perspective is totally different.

"Whatever film has been made so far, they have something from 'Ramayana'. So when you will see the film, you might find parallels. I think it's very contemporary. He (Ratnam) just wanted to experiment," said Vikram.

Vikram said he had been wanting to work with Ratnam for a long time.

"We had been planning to work together for the last couple of years, but it didn't happen. The dates didn't match, scripts didn't work out. Finally, for this he called me," he said.

Asked whether he would cast a spell on Bollywood, he said: "I guess forgetting everything and coming here (Bollywood) and working would have bothered me. They called me and I really liked the script...

"I, of course, loved the thought that my audience was going to be much larger. There are lots of people who watch my films. Now those who don't speak Tamil even they will watch my films. That's something that excites me."

A co-production of Madras Talkies and Reliance Big Pictures, the much awaited "Raavan" is scheduled for a June 18 release.

Shah Rukh, Kareena rule popularity charts

New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor left behind a brigade of other celebrities in popularity to top the Bollywood Barometer ranked by eBay India.

The Bollywood Barometer judges on the basis of number of celebrity products available for sale on eBay India.

Shah Rukh tops amongst the actors, followed by Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. Kareena tops amongst the actresses, followed by Rani Mukherjee and Aishwarya Rai, according to a statement.

The barometer chose the top 10 actors and actresses from the celebrity-related merchandise of around 50 Bollywood stars.

The range of products listed to judge included movie memorabilia like film magazine covers, DVDs, posters, press booklets, lobby cards, movies and books.

Shilpa Shetty and Abhishek Bachchan's popularity seems to be low as they were on the 10th position.

Now Shah Rukh Khan endorses Pepsodent

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) After endorsing brands like Hyundai Santro, Linc pens, Navratna Oil and Tag Heuer, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will now endorse Pepsodent toothpaste.

In the ad campaign titled "Papa & Pappu (P&P)", Shahrukh will be seen playing a doting father, while child artist Keval will play his son Pappu.

"Shah Rukh Khan is the best choice for ‘Papa’ in the campaign as the super successful actor also practices what he preaches. He is the perfect role model of a father who finds ways to spend time with his own children away from his active schedule and stardom," Srinandan Sundaram, Category Head - Oral Care, Hindustan Unilever Limited said in a statement.

Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri have two children - son Aryan and daughter Suhana.

Kites will be the successor of 3 Idiots experts

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) Super duper hit and the successor of "3 Idiots" is how multiplex bosses predict the future of Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori starrer international love story "Kites", which is releasing Friday.

"We have very high expectations from 'Kites' as after '3 Idiots' this will be the biggest release. We are going to have 13 shows per three screen and 14 shows per four property respectively for the movie," Deepak Taluja, senior vice president (business and operations) of Fun Cinemas, told IANS.

"In terms of paid previews, as of now we just have one show (for Thursday night) but if (booking) response will be good, we'll look for more," he added.

A senior executive from PVR cinemas said on condition of anonymity that "Kites" has a very good pre-release buzz. "And after '3 Idiots', we have very high hopes with this one. If all goes well, this could anywhere be the successor of '3 Idiots'."

"On an average we are keeping around 10-15 shows per property for the movie. The advance bookings have already opened and it's picking up well while the paid preview bookings for Thursday is decent so far," the source added.

Produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu, "Kites" is a mega-budget venture worth Rs.150 crore in three versions - English, Hindi and Spanish. While the Hindi version will hit screens Friday, the crisper and racier English version, edited by Hollywood fame Brett Ratner, is scheduled for a May 28 release.

The film also stars Kabir Bedi and Kangana Ranaut in cameos.

Releasing simultaneously on more than 2,300 screens worldwide, including over 500 overseas in over 60 countries, it is being distributed by Reliance Big Pictures.

Shot in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Fe, "Kites" is a love story about an Indian man and a Latin woman who fall in love without understanding each others' languages. It is about their thrilling journey filled with precious moments and unexpected betrayal.

To cash in on the unprecedented buzz and hype, Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, has big plans.

"We are looking at 'Kites' as a super duper hit. We are going to have 33 shows per day for the movie with the capacity of 8,600 seats per day and we expect a mass footfall because of its successful commercial banner and huge star cast like Hrithik and Barbara," Awasthi said.

"3 Idiots" grossed about Rs.400 crore, making it Indian cinema's highest earner.

"'Kites' will repeat the big bang theory in cinema. We are going to have on an average 15 shows per property and around three paid previews Thursday night. Hrithik and Barbara's chemistry is going to scorch the screens," said Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas.

Director Basu says with its international appeal, "Kites" will take Bollywood globally in the true sense.

Big B falls short of Sachin's Twitter record

New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) Amitabh Bachchan may be the megastar of Bollywood, but his draw of 37,500 fans on the first day of Twitter was far less than that of Sachin Tendulkar at 79,000.

Tendulkar was bitten by the Twitter bug early this month, while Amitabh joined Twitter Tuesday and got plenty of welcome messages from various celebrities.

But the 67-year-old, who regularly writes on his blog and also has a mobile blog and a voice blog, is excited with his first day's experience on Twitter.

"Day 1 on Twitter, Day 757 on blog, Day 138 from the year... endless days of love and affection to those that count and follow... love," Amitabh posted on his Twitter account.

Anupam Kher joins Shahid Kapoor in 'Mausam'

Mumbai, May 19 (IANS) Anupam Kher has agreed to feature in Shahid Kapoor starrer "Mausam" and says the fact that his good friend Pankaj Kapoor is directing the film was a good enough reason for him to give his nod for the project.

"I'm yet to get a clear indication of my role. But the fact that Pankaj is directing is enough incentive for me," said Anupam, 55, who will join the "Mausam" team in Edinburgh, Britain.

"I'm very fond of him (Pankaj) as an actor and as a human being. And I also like his son Shahid a lot. In fact, in his brief career I've played Shahid's father thrice (in 'Vivah', 'Dil Bole Hadippa' and 'Badmaash Company')."

This time, though, Anupam isn't playing Shahid's father. It is apparently the role that Pankaj had earmarked for himself. Now with direction proving a full-time occupation, Pankaj would rather concentrate on direction and let others do the acting.

However, the dates for "Mausam" are still being worked out.

Meanwhile, Anupam flies out to the Lake District in England for a walk-on talkathon on the BBC's prestigious business talk show "Peschardt's People". The internationally known host Michael Peschardt is known for grilling entertainers, academician and others on his show. From India, N. Narayana Murthy, Vijay Mallya and Amitabh Bachchan have appeared on his show.

"I like representing our country on international platforms. Specially on a non-film platform. I think I've moved ahead of being just an actor," Anupam said.
